Whale Watching - 5 Things You Should Know

Whale watching is the biggest show on earth. With the ocean as their stage, the spellbinding and entertaining whales put on daily star performances for the whale watch cruises visiting their feeding grounds. In this article youll discover how to get the most out of your trip.

Picture this... a warm summer afternoon on a boat in a gentle rolling ocean. A cooling breeze softly massages your face where you sit, and you begin to close your eyes and drift away... the sound of the boats engine begins to fade and finally stops. The boat, like you, is drifting over the waves and following the breeze. Its very peaceful and calm and after a stressful week at work you finally feel in harmony with the world.

Then something explodes... out of the water... and only a few feet from your nose! A 30-ton humpback... the length of a large house... it breaches... and in another second is gone. And youre left in disbelief and wonder. And its just the start of your whale watching!

While whales are scattered throughout the world theres only a handful of accessible locations to view them in their natural environment. The coastal waters of New England and the west coast of North America are prime locations for whale watching. Hawaii and South Africa are also superb locations to spot whales, as are the ocean waters around New Zealand. So if a vacation or trip takes you to any of these areas make sure you book a cruise and take in the biggest show on earth.

Heres five things to remember to ensure you have an enjoyable whale watch.

PLAN YOUR WHALE WATCHING TRIP

It may seem obvious but book in advance for your trip to avoid long lines or even disappointment. Usually at least one week before the trip is recommended. Whale watching cruises can last anywhere from 3 hours to 41/2 hours, and the length depends on how long it takes to find the whales. If youre easily bored staring at the open ocean then take along a novel or your iPod, or something to entertain young children if theyre part of your group. While most boats are equipped with a place to buy food and drink they dont usually mind you taking your own pack lunch or snacks to keep the costs down.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A WHALE WATCH CRUISE

Ive two criteria when I choose a whale watch cruise company. How long have they been in business and does it have whale experts on staff? You can usually uncover this information by checking out their web site or calling them.

Most whale watch boats use sophisticated sonar and communications equipment to find the whales, but as Im not an expert in equipment I look to see if a company has a history of organizing whale watch trips. Good experience is usually a sign theyre doing something right and a safe bet. I also like to see at least one scientist or naturalist on the crew narrating the tour, as having a knowledgeable authority provides a better understanding of what youre seeing.

CHECK FOR A WHALE SIGHTING GUARANTEE

It happens occasionally you dont get to see a whale. These mammals are unpredictable, and while the captain will make every effort to uncover their location, some days theyre nowhere to be found. So make sure you book on a cruise that offers a guarantee sighting or you get to cruise again for free. Offering a guarantee is another good sign of a confident and experienced whale watch company.

WHALE WATCHING IS DONE ON THE OPEN OCEAN.

Experienced whale watch cruise companies do not go out in rough seas, but the whale feeding grounds are normally miles from land in the open ocean. Even at the height of summer the open sea can still be choppy, and so if you suffer with motion sickness then take something about an hour before you board the cruise.

QUICK CHECK OF WHALE WATCHING EQUIPMENT.

Recommended things to bring on your whale watch are a camera and plenty of film or memory cards. Take or borrow a pair of binoculars, as whales many times surface yards from the boat, and having binoculars will provide close up views other passengers just wont get.

As for clothing, wear sneakers or something rubber-soled for good traction on a wet and slippery deck. And take sunscreen, sunglasses, and if its got a tie strap - a hat. Because of the breeze on open water take a sweatshirt just in case of temperature drop, especially for a late afternoon trip. The boats will go out in the rain, so if youve got a poncho pack it as well. I put most of my whale watch necessities in a small fanny pack.

Whales are mesmerizing mammals thatve traveled thousands of miles to feed in their playground coastal waters. They dont stay for long so go ahead and book your whale watch adventure and prepare for the biggest show on earth.

Prepare Your Fishing And Camping Gear

Some people camp, some people fish. As for myself, Im never really sure which category do I belong to. I mean, I love going out into the woods and camping out for a few days, either alone or with my family. But I also love fishing, as my wife and kids will probably tell you. If ever push comes to shove, I would probably say that I camp out just to fish. I cannot bear the thought of having just one day fishing or camping, so I usually plan my outdoor trips to last at least 2 days; enough time for me to enjoy the two things that I enjoy the most.

One of the most common problems that prevent you from fully enjoying your fishing and camping trip is finding out that you missed an important piece of equipment, just at the moment when you need it the most. These things have happened to me time and time again over the past several years, so I finally resolved to sit down and make a checklist to be sure that I bring everything I needed on my next fishing or camping trip. I should have done this years before, you know. It would have saved me a lot of trouble and frustration.

Its a sure bet that you want to spend your time camping and fishing, not worrying about every little thing that you might have missed or left at home. This article might help you out in creating a checklist of your own. Of course, its not guaranteed that everything you may find here will suit you, especially if you just like to camp out and not go fishing during your trip.

For fishing, make sure you bring your fishing rods and your tackle box, of course. Open it up and check to see if you have your lures and your bait. I also bring along a depthfinder, together with a charger, cords, and a map. You might think bringing along a sunscreen is way overkill, but youd be surprised at how many fishermen go home with sunburned arms and necks, so packing along a bottle of sunblock oil or lotion will definitely do you good. I also bring along a pair of gloves, a cap, and my sunglasses for good measure.

My sleeping gear usually consists of a bed or sleeping bag, and a pillow. For safety and convenience, I bring a fan or a heater, since you never know when youd be sweating or freezing during the night. Of course theres my trusty flashlight with extra batteries, and a radio, as well. I also bring some cords and 3-way plugs with me, just in case.

For food, I like to bring some sodas, fruit juices, coffee, sugar, and perhaps some cream. For cooking, I make sure I have plenty of salt and pepper, as well as some ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. If I can bring an ice chest, I pack away some cheese and butter, and ice, of course. My major food items would include a lot of steaks, burgers, and hotdogs, although I do include potatoes, onions, lettuce and tomatoes in my outdoor diet. Im a sucker for being prepared, so I usually take a couple of canned meat with me as well.

Your eating gear should include plates, spoons, knives, and forks, as well as a coffee pot and some cups or glasses. Dont ever forget your stove and your grill, plus a lighter, a pair of tongs, and some fuel. A large basin will serve as a dishpan, and bring some soap and extra water.

Now we come to the clothes. I make sure that I have at least 2 sets of clothes with me, like 2 or 3 shirts, 2 pants, 2 shorts, underwear and socks. I pack along a raincoat and a jacket for cold weather, too. For footwear, 2 pairs of boots and a pair of sandals should do just fine. Depending on the weather, I sometimes bring my snowshoes and an extra-warm winter coat.

These are the essentials that I make sure to bring every time I venture out on another fishing or camping trip. Of course, a first-aid kit and some grooming items always come in handy. If ever you have a motor home, then it will be no problem at all bringing all these items and then some. Make your own list, with some spaces to add your own favorite items, and enjoy the outdoors!

Should We Treat Cancer Or Prevent Cancer?

Cancer is one of the biggest killers around the world. In
America alone, 25% of all deaths are related to cancer.

Many people think of cancer as a single problem but in fact, it
is a number of problems spread throughout the body. Generally
speaking, if cancer is caught in the early stages of
development, it can be treated and cured.

Although there are several different types of cancer, the most
common ones are Lung, Prostate, Breast, Testicular, Skin and
Colon cancers.

Genes control the multiplication and growth of cells. If these
genes are defective in the first place, then the cells will not
be able to grow or divide properly. As a result of this
abnormality, cancerous cells are born.

There are a number of factors which cause cancer. Factors which
are controllable by humans are smoking, toxic elements and
radiation. These can be controlled to some degree and therefore
it would be wise to avoid them by changing lifestyle habits.
However, there are certain elements which are outside our
control.
These include mutation and inherited DNA.

As a result of studies conducted by the American Cancer
Society, more than 180,000 people have died as a direct result
of smoking. Another 200,000 people have died due to lack of
changing lifestyle habits. Obesity, laziness and malnutrition
can have an effect on the growth of cancer. Needless to say,
cancer has risen by more than 50% since 1995.

Let's take a look at some of these cancer causes in more
detail.

Smoking: The most prevalent and easily avoidable type of cancer
is the one caused by the use of tobacco. This includes the use
of cigarettes, cigars and pipes. Even though smokers are
addicted to nicotine, the fact that 200,000 people die every
year due to smoking caused cancer should be enough motivation
to quit. Some experts say that cessation of smoking can
increase lifespan by up to 20 years.

Although nothing has been proven, studies indicate that stress
may also be a contributing factor to cancer. Many cancer
patients are also employed in stressful jobs. Some theologians
believe that stress lowers the bodies immunity to cancer.

Exercise and Healthy Eating: Healthy eating and exercise is
universally known to be beneficial in many aspects. But, many
people don't know that food full of nutrition can reduce the
risk of cancer. Specific foods such as fruit and veg can help
prevent cancer whilst fatty foods such as meat can increase the
likelihood of cancer.

Skin cancer can easily be avoided by simply listening to good
advice. Wear sunglasses, hats, sun cream and other sensible
items of clothing to avoid the onset of this type of cancer.
Although this may seem like common sense, more than one million
people have been diagnosed with skin cancer in a single year.

In summary, some cancers can be avoided. New research and
studies are being conducted all the time. So, rather than
concentrating on how to treat cancer patients, maybe we should
all be looking for more ways to prevent the cancer in the first
place

Why You Need To Wear Sunglasses In Winter Too

You may be the type of person who never leaves the house without your sunglasses during the warmer months. Not only are they great protection from the suns glaring rays, but theyre also quite the accessory these days as well. And if youre like a lot of people, you probably own more than one pair and scout the sunglass display in the local markets every time you walk by. Well, good for you for taking care of your eyes! But did you know that sunglasses are just important in the winter as they are during the rest of the year? Its true, and heres why.

Sunglasses actually play a big role in good eye health. The UV rays from the sun are very strong all year round even though they dont always feel that way on our faces and bodies, especially fingers and toes during the chilling winter months. But nevertheless, they are and we need to protect ourselves eyes included from their harmful affects.

Its actually very serious business, more serious than most people realize. Over time, UV rays can in fact, lead to diseases of the eye like cataracts (opaquacity in the membrane covering the pupil causing a decrease in vision), macular degeneration (discoloration of the cornea), or even cancer, that may require surgery or worse yet, be irreversible. And if your eyes are normally sensitive to bright light and the suns rays anyway, you may be headed for even more trouble if you dont wear sunglasses.

You know how bright the sun can be when it reflects off the snow and hits your eyes it hurts, right? Add in the ultraviolet element and there you have it. But by simply putting on a pair of sunglasses, you can not only avoid the discomfort of the suns bright and harmful UV rays reflected on your eyes, but youll also be preventing the possible onset of eye distress such as disease as well. So you see, sunglasses work double-duty (or even triple-duty if they compliment your appearance wink, wink).

And dont forget the kids. Even though children look adorable and make us smile when they put on a pair of cute, child-sized sunglasses, their eyes actually need protection the same as everyone elses. So dont hesitate to pick them up a pair the next time youre passing by the kiddie styles and you hear those three little words I want that! because youll actually be doing a good thing in consideration of their eye health.

Natural Sunlight And The Sunroom Enclosure: What You Need To Know

Your home is your most important investment, and a sunroom can be the most important addition to your investment. Give a thought to what you need to ensure that you'll be able to enjoy your sunroom as you expect.Your home is one of the most important investment you will make in your life. It can also be one of the most expensive investments you'll make. If you decide that you need more room and would like to add an addition to your home, you have several choices. You can add an additional room built in the same manner as the original architecture of the house, or you can add on a new and elegant sunroom.

There are many reasons to choose the sunroom. With a room with walls of glass, you'll be able to see out unfettered to enjoy every bit of your back garden, your trees, birds and squirrels, or your children busily playing. You won't have to be concerned with the oppressive heat of the day, unpleasant gusts of wind should the day be a cool one, or the ever-present insects that can spoil the most beautiful of days.

Natural sunlight. That's what you get from a room with walls of glass...you won't need to bother with the harsh lights of a lightbulb if you don't feel the need. But you don't want sunlight to come pouring into the room without hindrance - you'll find yourself squinting or feeling the need for sunglasses. However, with the proper type of glass, much of the light given off by the sun can be filtered out, so there'll be no annoying glare to spoil your pleasure of the room.

A room with walls of glass need to be insulated just as do walls of wood or brick. Most sunroom companies offer their own trademarked glass - they have engineers who spend their time trying to design the most efficient glass possible.

What do you need in glass for a sunroom?

You have to consider the R-Value. This measures the thermal resistance of a material, or how easily heat travels through it. The higher the R-Value, the greater the insulation - and the lower your energy cost swill be. An R-Value of 4.0 is suggested for the very best comfort.

Give a thought to the percentage of visible light transmitted through the glass. A visible light transmittance below 60 percent is is recommended for that glare-free natural lighting, as I mentioned above

And then there's the heat of the sun. Relative Heat Gain measures the heat gained through a glazing, and, indeed, can be more important to a glass room than the R-Value. You don't want a room that will be unbearably hot or expensive to keep cool. With a type of glass that doesn't gain a lot of heat, you'll ensure that that won't be the case.

In these days, it's possible to build a sunroom in anything from a few days to a week or so. And although sunrooms are pricey - you simply must not skimp on quality - they can be less expensive than traditional brick and mortar extensions.

DIY Sunroom Kits

If you'd like to have a sunroom but you don't want to have to pay a contractor to build it for you, you can always do it yourself. Most manufacturers offer do-it-yourself kits so that the handy home owner can be in charge of its construction from the beginning. You'll want to carefully gauge your skills and stick-to-it-tiveness if you choose this route. The addition of a sunroom can increase the value of your home, but only if it is built correctly. But if you have the necessary skills, you can indeed do it yourself.

The skills needed may vary. If you're going to build your sunroom onto a pre-existing deck or porch, you won't need as many skills as you would if you were going to build an entire room from scratch - necessitating the grading and preparation of a concrete slab on which to put the new structure. And if you intend to extend your home's heating and cooling system into the new room, that calls for another set of skills.

Sunroom Indoor Furniture

There's a vast array of furniture for the sunroom. Even though a great deal of harmful sunlight will be blocked out, you'll still want to go with furniture with removable cushions, so that you can replace any that fade. Wicker is the traditional furniture for the sunroom, but there's nothing to say you can't use elegant metals or wood. The addition of green plants and an aquarium or two will certainly add an elegant touch.

Most people use their sunroom as a family room, or a place for solitude and reflection. But some people like to experiment and put their kitchen into a sunroom, or their bedroom and even their bathroom. Those are something to think about, but with the complexities of the glass and the designs of the room, you might want to just stick with the tradition uses of a room with walls of glass.
